【13+ TAIPEI INNOVATION HABITAT】
From Electrical Engineering at NCTU to Retail Frontlines: How a Startup Team Found Its First Target Market
This session opens with Dalun’s journey from Electrical Engineering at National Chiao Tung University to entrepreneurship in Japanese products, retail, wholesale distribution, and e-commerce. Using his experience as a starting point, the discussion explores how startup teams identify their first target market and validate business opportunities.
The focus is not on the products themselves, but on a key entrepreneurial challenge: turning innovation into a viable business. Beyond building a product, founders must understand customer needs, validate market demand, assess willingness to pay, and continuously refine their business model in response to market feedback.
💥Learning Objectives
- Understand the gap between building a product and achieving market adoption.
- Learn how to identify an initial target market by focusing on customers with the strongest needs and highest willingness to pay.
- Develop low-cost market validation approaches to avoid overcommitting resources before validating demand.
- Gain practical insights through live Q&A to help teams clarify their market entry and validation strategies.
Course Outline
📘Module 1: Opening Story – Why an Electrical Engineering Graduate Entered Retail
From a technical background to the frontlines of the market: digital pets, Japanese products, Japanese-language laptops, consumer electronics, and entrepreneurial setbacks. This session explores the relationship between product opportunities and market validation.
📘Module 2: Common Startup Pitfalls
Building a product does not guarantee demand. Customer interest does not necessarily translate into payment. A large market does not mean it is easy to enter.
📘Module 3: Finding Your First Target Market
Shifting the focus from “Who do I want to sell to?” to “Who needs it most, is easiest to reach, and can provide the earliest feedback?”
📘Module 4: The Four Questions of Market Validation
Do customers understand it? Do they need it? Will they buy it? Will they come back? Learn how to turn market assumptions into measurable indicators.
📘Module 5: Low-Cost Validation Tools
Customer interviews, surveys, social media testing, pre-orders, small-scale experiments, low-budget advertising, product demonstrations, and feedback collection.
📘Module 6: Live Q&A and Startup Case Discussions
Address pre-submitted questions and help teams identify practical next steps for market validation and entry.
We are honored to invite Dalun Huang to share insights on how startup teams can identify and enter their first target market
